In the 1950s and 1960s,academic research on the relationship between human and nature mainly revolved around the debate between anthropocentrism and naturalism. In the complex discourse conflict, the relationship between human and nature did not move towards the predetermined harmony. In this context,Calvino gave his own answer to this question in The Cloven Viscount.Physical property and human nature are interconnected, and the two can shape and transform into each other.Through the botanical imagination,Calvino described how mint and rosemary domesticated human cognition and participated in the process of shaping the promiscuous image of leprosy patients, and how grapes and olives were cultivated by humans and became plants with moral attributes in Western tradition. In the process of interaction between the four plants mentioned above and the human imagination,Calvino find that only through the imagination of modern man to break through the inherent conception of nature, human beings and nature can be connected into a brand new community.
