On the Function of the Tang Dynasty Lion Dance in Exorcising Evil and Bringing Auspiciousness
The Tang Dynasty Wufang lion dance,which was popular in the royal palace,had the meaning of praying for peace,exorcising evil and bringing auspiciousness.These functions had been manifested since the appearance of the lion image.The lion imagery was further deified and the image of auspicious beast was more prominent.To a certain extent,The functions of exorcising evil and bringing auspiciousness are also shown in its performance costumes,forms and numbers of people.Wufang beliefs have infiltrated into the lion dance and merged with the functions of exorcising evil,dispelling epidemics,praying for blessings and bringing auspiciousness of Nuo opera.Wufang lion dance thus enriches the exorcising ritual and strengthens the function of exorcising evil.
