The study of Paleolithic technology originated within the field of Paleolithic archaeology in France during the 1960s and, over the past decade, has gradually been introduced and applied to the study of Paleolithic materials in China.Through examination of the application of technological ontology in Paleolithic technological research and relevant practices, this study argues that it is helpful to understand the logic of lithic technological evolution through viewing lithic artifacts as technical objects within a specific technological genealogy.Technological ontology provides an emic perspective for the study of Paleolithic technology.Employing this method, alongside an etic historical approach,is beneficial in interpreting issues such as regional technological change and population exchanges and migrations, offering a technological perspective from which to explore Paleolithic cultural evolution.
