Through a comprehensive reexamination of recent archaeological materials and research, the paper undertakes an analysis of the late Shang culture's expansion and contraction in the eastern region. With a focus on analysis of the cultural attributes of pottery, and by comparing changes in the influence of late Shang culture in the southern, northern, and western regions, this study concludes that the late Shang culture underwent a contraction both spatially and in terms of its cultural influence in the eastern region.Strategic management of the eastern region by the Shang Dynasty, particularly in the northern Lu region, laid a foundation for access to salt resources in the area. However,it also contributed to the deterioration of relations between the Shang and Yi.Meanwhile, the rise of distinctive cultural characteristics following the eastern migration of clans and lineages indirectly led to the differentiation and weakening of the power of the late Shang cultural center at Yinxu.
