Through AMS 14C dating of ancient tree remains unearthed from the Shiao site in Yuyao,Zhejiang,as well as anatomical analysis of wood from ancient and living trees and pyrolysis/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(Py/GC-MS),this study establishes that ancient tree remains excavated from the Shiao site belong to the species Myrica rubra Sieb.et Zucc. This makes them the earliest and most definitively identified Myrica rubra tree remains in China to date. The coexistence of Myrica rubra fruit trees and ancient rice paddies in the paddy field ecological landscape indicates that the people indigenous to the Ningbo-Shaoxing plain during the Liangzhu culture period already subsisted on a gathering economy, with diversity in food resources.
