In inscriptions on Zeng state bronze vessels, the patron's name is commonly written as"Zeng Bo",who was previously assumed to be the ruler of the Zeng state.Based on current archaeological evidence,"Zeng Bo",whose name appears in inscriptions on bronzes from the Sujialong cemetery in Jingshan, the Xiongjia Laowan bronze assemblage in Suizhou, and the Yejiashan cemetery, was not actually the ruler of the state of Zeng.Rather,he was a descendant of a secondary son of the Marquis of Zeng, serving as a leader of the noble lineage within the Zeng state's extended family.During the transitional period from the Western Zhou to the Eastern Zhou through the early Spring and Autumn period, secondary sons of the Marquis of Zeng held fiefdoms outside the capital and used them to establish their own clans. These succeeding clan leaders could also claim the title of"Zeng Bo".The region around Jingshan Sujialong is presumed to be the"town of Gai",which was the fiefdom of You Fu,the second son of the Marquis of Zeng, and the family of"Zeng Bo Qi".
