In 2020,the Hebei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology et al.profiled the south city wall of the greater city at the Nanyang site in Liangmatai Township,Rongcheng County,Xiongan New Area,Hebei Province.Excavation revealed remains dating from the Warring States period through the Han Dynasty.Warring States period features include a foundation trench and midden pits of the south city wall of the greater city,along with artifacts made of pottery and bronze.Han Dynasty remains consist of midden pits,kiln sites,and ditches,with pottery as the predominant type of unearthed artifact.Based on stratigraphic relationships and artifact characteristics,this study shows that construction of the south city wall of the greater city began no earlier than the late Warring States period and was abandoned during the middle to late Eastern Han dynasty.The foundation trench of the south city wall is shaped like an inverted trapezoid in profile,constructed through a segmented ramming technique.This archaeological excavation provides new data for exploring the Eastern Zhou period"Yi"city in southern Yan,as well as for studying Yan State cities,the development of Yan cultural history,and the process of urbanization in the Baiyangdian area during the pre-Qin period.
