Through analyzing the production and casting techniques of early Warring States period weapon molds unearthed from the capital city site of Zhu in 2019,this study identifies diverse ceramic mold manufacturing techniques. Most molds incorporated fine sand into the clay body, while some sword molds included large amounts of plant ash containing rice husks. The seam surfaces of the molds were coated using an immersion technique, and inorganic mold release agents were applied to the cavity surfaces of some molds to enhance casting quality, allowing for multiple uses.By the early Warring States period, the State of Zhu had developed an efficient,low-cost,yet quality-conscious weapon casting system. These findings provide evidence for understanding the origins and development of metallurgical handicrafts in the Shandong region, and interactions between the State of Zhu and neighboring vassal states.
