The Southeast region, located between the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River to the north of Lingnan,is an area with significant distribution of ceramic jiao dou.Typological analysis distinguishes three regional types:Jiangdong,Gan,and Min,corresponding to three developmental stages:from the mid-late Eastern Han through the Three Kingdoms and Western Jin periods, the Eastern Jin preiod and from the Southern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang periods.Amongst them, the second stage is a lacuna. The emergence and development of the Jiangdong type are associated with the local prevalence of bronze and iron jiao dou and the incipient development of Yue kilns. The establishment of the Eastern Wu capital in Nanjing during the Three Kingdoms period likely also played a role. The rapid decline of this type after the Western Jin period can be attributed to factors such as the influence of northern burial customs and control exerted by northern aristocratic clans over local ceramic handicraft production. The Min and Gan types of ceramic jiao dou appeared during the Southern Dynasties period, reflecting increasing cultural regionality. The rise of local forces in the mid-late Southern Dynasties is likely a major reason for this development.
