From January to March 2022,the Xi'an City Institute of Cultural Relic Conservation and Archaeology excavated 15 ancient tombs in Xinzhaizi Village,Chang'an District,Xi'an City, including three from the Sui and Tang periods(M1,M4,M15).M1 is an earthen cave tomb with a vertical shaft, while M4 and M15 are earthen cave tombs with long sloping passageways.Unearthed artifacts from these three tombs are made of pottery, bronze, and lead.Based on tomb forms, epitaphs, and characteristics of unearthed artifacts,M1,M4,and M15 date to the third year of the Kaicheng reign of the late Tang Dynasty(AD 838),the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, and from the Sui to early Tang periods, respectively.Ml contained an epitaph revealing the tomb occupant as Xiangli Youyue from the Tang Dynasty. The excavation of these three tombs provides significant material for the study of Sui and Tang period burials in the Xi'an region and the genealogy of the Xiangli clan.
