The Qijia culture and its flexed burials have been linked by scholars to processes of social complexity in the Gansu-Qinghai region and in early China as a whole.Research indicates that Qijia culture flexed burials exhibit phased differences.During the first phase, they served as markers of social hierarchy, reflecting the dependence of women and children on men or adults.During the second phase, this function diminished, and the practice of flexed burials no longer has direct correlation with gender or age.Characteristics of Qijia culture flexed burials originated from the Machang culture and spread to neighboring, subsequent archaeological cultures.Phased changes in Qijia culture flexed burials resulted from local adaptation to foundational economic shifts and reflect unique characteristics of processes of social complexity in the Gansu-Qinghai region.
