It is proposed here that additional clarification and revisions of current understandings regarding the arrangement of attendant tombs in the southern flank of the Zhaoling mausoleum mountain, based on division of civilian and military officials to the left and right, the"central axis,"chronological north-to-south arrangement, and the influence of topography. It is clarified the layout pattern and development process of the attendant tomb area, which ultimately displays distinct northern and southern sections and clear division into three zones. It is suggested that there is no sequential correspondence between the official ranks of tomb occupants and arrangement of government offices in the imperial city of Tang Chang'an.Additionally, the layout of attendant tombs is not a simulation of the imperial city. With the exception of the case of mausoleum guardians who needed burial plots before death,it is unlikely that burial plots were bestowed during occupants'lifetimes.
