THE EXCAVATION OF JINSHAN KILN SITE IN SHANGYU,ZHEJIANG
Located in Shangyu District,Zhejiang Province, the Jinshan kiln site holds special significance as the birthplace of mature green wares and a major ceramics production center during the Han and Six Dynasties. The site operated from the Eastern Han through to Western Jin,making it a typical kiln site of the industry's zenith.Between March and October 2014,various institutions including the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology excavated at the Jinshan kiln site. They unveiled a wealth of features, such as kilns, ash pits, and ash ditches, and discovered a multitude of high-quality mature green wares-this site currently boasts the greatest number of kilns and the richest findings among all early mature green ware kiln sites.Three well-preserved dragon kilns, characterized by their long, sloping structures, were uncovered. These kilns offer a comprehensive overview of kiln development from Eastern Han to Western Jin.This was also the first time that researchers could confirm the existence of a three-section kiln during the Eastern Han,offering invaluable insights into the production and firing processes during the initial development stages of mature green wares. The unearthed artifacts consist entirely of mature green wares, featuring about 30 different types, such as zun-wine vessel,gui-food container,xi-washbasin,pen-basin,lamp,and guan-jar.These items, with their high-quality body and glaze, exquisite decoration,as well as superior production and setting technique, represent the initial peak in the development of mature green wares. The excavation of the Jinshan kiln site led to several key discoveries:a novel type of Han mature green wares;a complete kiln development timeline from the Eastern Han to Western Jin;an intact semi-subterranean kiln;the creation and refinement of individual separators;the unearthing of a vast quantity of high-quality green wares. As such, this site's excavation is critically important for understanding the origins and development of mature green wares, the evolution of kiln technology, and the process of kiln production.
