THE 2021 EXCAVATION OF XIPANG JINGJIAO MONASTERY SITE IN TURPAN,XINJIANG
The Xipang(also known as Shüipang)Jingjiao Monastery site is situated atop a hill at the southern base of Flaming Mountain in Turpan,Xinjiang. The architectural remnants are categorized into two main sections:the primary buildings at the hill's summit and the auxiliary structures on its slopes. The archaeological excavations conducted in 2021 essentially completed a comprehensive exposure of the buildings in the hilltop area, revealing 13 room foundations, four walls, two platforms, two passageways, and one brick-paved area.In terms of layout, the structures can be categorized into four groups:three groups arranged approximately side by side from north to south in an east-west orientation, and a group of architectural remains situated to the west of these three groups. The architectural remains show complex signs of extensive repairs, alterations, additions, and reconstructions. The three north-south aligned groups of buildings have generally similar structures:small chambers in the east, and larger halls in the center and west.Based on the internal structures of the buildings and the artifacts found, their potential uses can be preliminarily inferred to include a ceremonial hall, wine cellar, kitchen, bedroom, library, and restroom. The artifacts uncovered at the site encompass over a thousand significant items, including an extensive collection of manuscripts in languages such as Chinese,Syriac,Uyghur, and Sogdian,as well as fragments of mural paintings and a variety of important artifacts made from pottery, wood, copper, iron, and textiles.Additionally, there are numerous general artifacts, remnants, and preserved plant remains.
