Does Artificial Intelligence Promote Carbon Unlocking Efficiency?——A Study of Threshold Effects Based on Technological and Institutional Constraints
With the increasing global concern about climate change,it has become particularly important to explore the potential of Artificial Intelligence(AI)in promoting carbon release efficiency. This study constructed an evaluation system for the development level of AI and an evaluation index for carbon release efficiency based on panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2012 to 2021.The entropy weight method and the super-efficient SBM-GML model were used to measure the AI index and carbon release efficiency values, respectively, and the double-fixed model and the threshold regression model were used to analyze the impact of AI on the carbon unlocking efficiency and the threshold effects of environmental regulation and technological innovation level. The results showed that AI significantly improves carbon unlocking efficiency by transforming production methods, optimising industrial structure and improving environmental governance efficiency;there is a significant threshold effect of the level of environmental regulation and technological innovation on the impact of AI,indicating that moderate environmental regulation and technological innovation are the key to promoting AI to achieve carbon unlocking efficiency improvement. This study provides new theoretical and empirical support for understanding the role of AI in promoting green and low-carbon transformation, and also provides a basis for policymakers in formulating relevant policies.
