Impact of Fulfilling Social Responsibility on the Risk-taking of Commercial Banks:Moderating Effect Based on Banking Competition and Green Credit
Commercial banks are at the forefront of practicing sustainable development and fulfilling social responsibilities across various industries. The empirical research using data from 35 commercial banks in China from 2010 to 2022 was conducted. It is found that fulfilling social responsibilities has a restraining effect on the level of risk undertaken by commercial banks.Additionally, the relationship between competition within the banking industry and the fulfillment of social responsibilities has a positive moderating effect on bank risk-taking.On the other hand, green credit has a negative moderating effect on the relationship between fulfilling social responsibilities and bank risk-taking.Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the inhibitory effect of fulfilling social responsibilities on bank risk-taking is not significant for state-owned banks and urban-rural commercial banks compared to joint-stock banks.Lastly, based on the research findings, recommendations are proposed for risk prevention strategies for commercial banks.
