文学的独立性和个性,在沈从文的批评世界里是其的研究最高范畴,他的大量批评篇什相对应地注重文学本体和创作主体的估衡。通过创作的深刻体验来议论创作,在他的某些确有偏见的批评中,包含着合理的成分,为现代中国文学批评树立了一则优良传统。
