Based on the vector auto-regression model and impulse response function, this study takes the panel data of 30 provincial capital cities in China from 1998 to 2017 as a sample to empirically analyze the impact of patent numbers, patent types, and patent ci-tations on digital economy. The results show that:The increase of the total number of patents, invention patents, design patents, utility model patents and the number of citations significantly improves the development level of digital economy with an improvement of 0.028 5 units,0.027 8 units,0.019 7 units,0.03 units, and 0.018 8 units as each patent number increases one unit. The impulse response graph of the shocks between indicators shows that the increase of patent numbers, patent types, and patent citations will pro-mote the development of digital economy. The impact on digital economy reaches peak value during the 0th period and decline after-wards,whereas the overall impact stays positive. The impact can be listed in descending order as the number of total patents, invention patent, patent citations, utility model patent, and design patent.
