Taking highway construction and high-speed railway opening as the entry point of transportation infrastructure improvement, based on the panel data of 274 cities in China from 2007 to 2022,this paper comprehensively applied the high-dimensional fixed effects model to empirically investigate the impact of transportation infrastructure improvement on urban innovation capacity, and adopted the four-stage mediation effects model to test the mediation mechanism of the manpower agglomeration and the capital accumulation as two mediation variables and analyzed the validity of the mediation effect;and the heterogeneity analysis was conducted for cities with differ-ent population sizes. The results of the study show that transportation infrastructure improvement can effectively enhance urban innova-tion capacity, and it mainly enhances urban innovation capacity by promoting human aggregation and capital accumulation. The hetero-geneity analysis concludes that transportation infrastructure improvement will have a stronger promoting effect on the enhancement of in-novation capacity in less developed small and medium-sized cities.
