Abstract
As based on the same psychology-taboos,gracefulness,compensation,politeness,and so forth,euphemism is a common linguistic phenomenon in both English and Chinese languages.The present paper first gives an analysis of the history of the euphemism and its psychological foundation on which it is produced.Then the article argues its essential features and structures in terms of semantics and phonetics.Finally its practical application in social life is presented in the paper.
