Assessment of Earthquake Losses and Economic Recovery Based on Nighttime Light Data
Earthquake disasters and their post-disaster reconstruction have a profound impact on human society, and indirect economic losses from earthquakes affect not only regional economic recovery policies, but also are re-lated to economic assistance at the national level.Due to the cross-regional nature of economic activities and the difficulty of data acquisition,it is difficult for indirect economic loss surveys to cover all economic activities.How-ever,Nighttime Light(NTL)in a region can reflect its economic activities. This project mainly introduces the indi-rect economic losses caused by the earthquake in Hatay Province,Turkey in 2023,as well as the evaluation of the progress of recovery and reconstruction based on nighttime light images.First,a functional relationship between the Gross Domestic Product(GDP)and the nighttime light parameter is established based on pre-earthquake data.Sec-ond,the indirect losses of the earthquake are evaluated by the attenuation of nighttime light in the disaster areas af-ter the earthquake and compared with its direct losses, and the loss economy of each region is calculated.Finally,di-saster losses, economic losses and population impact areas characterized by light brightness losses are statistically evaluated.
