A Study and Explanation of the Construction of the Two Towns of Tuonan and Kainan in the Southwest Border Region of China during the Tang Dynasty
After the Tianbao War and subsequent military expansion, the Nanzhao Kingdom, located on the southwestern border of China during the Tang Dynasty, established important towns of Tuodong,Kainan,Zhenxi, and Ningbei along the borders of the kingdom in a relatively short period of time.Among them, many errors have been found in the interpretation of Kainan and Tuonan towns since the end of the Yuan Dynasty, causing the confusion of historical facts. In fact,Tuonan and Kainan on the southwestern border of China during the Tang Dynasty were the two new towns instead of the one with two different names. After the end of the Yuan Dynasty, the name"Tuonan"was deprecated, which was the mix of the name of"Kainan".With the clarification of the textual criticisms and explanations of the two towns,it is not so difficult to find that the establishment of Tuonan Town expanded the southwestern jurisdiction of the Nanzhao Kingdom, while the establishment of Kainan Town expanded the southern territory of the Nanzhao Kingdom, thereby radiating the culture of"system of prefectures and counties"from the Central Plains to the southwestern border areas, objectively promoting the communication, exchange, and integration of various ethnic groups in the region, further stabilizing the historical fundament of the border of southwest China, forming and development of boundaries for the Tang Dynasty and the later generations, and contributing to strengthening the awareness of the Chinese national community for the ethnic groups along the southwest border of China during the Tang Dynasty.
