Objective This study aims to investigate the abrasion resistance and behavior of two types of zirconia materials commonly used in clinical applications after being cut,and the cutting efficiency with different diamond bur.Method Multicolor multilayer zirconia and ultra-transparent zirconia were cut using Mani and RAICH diamond bur under a constant speed with a fixed force, respectively.A scanning reconstruction was per-formed with a micro-CT system to calculate the volume loss of both zirconias and evaluated the abrasion resis-tance.The cutting efficiency of the two burs was assessed using the ratio of volume loss of the zirconia materials to the mass loss of the burs.SEM was used to observe the micro-morphology of the surfaces of the two zirconia mate-rials and the two diamond burs before and after cutting. Results The volume loss of multi-color multilayer zirco-nia decreased with the cutting depth, which was more significant than that of ultra-transparent zirconia. The vol-ume loss of multicolor multilayer zirconium was MY 1st=20.07 mm3,MY 2nd=16.73 mm3,and MY 3rd=13.5 mm3.The volume loss of ultra-transparent zirconia(ST)was 12.64 mm3.The order of abrasion resistance was ST>MY 3rd>MY 2nd>MY 1st.The mean cutting efficiency of RAICH burs was 109.21,and that of Mani turning needles was 110.59;no statistically significant difference was observed by the t-test(P>0.05).Conclusion The multilayer multicolor zirconia is easier to cut as it is closer to the shallow layer, whereas it is easier to cut than the ultra-permeable zirconia;the cutting efficiencies of the two types of diamond burs are approximately the same.
