Conventional zirconia is widely used in the dental field due to its excellent mechanical properties and good biocompatibility. With the development of dental materials, transparent zirconia has emerged in recent years. It has great potential in the field of aesthetic restorations due to the increased translucency as a result of changes in stabilizer and crystal phase percentage. However, the bonding strength of zirconia ceramics to resin cement is limited, and surface treatment of zirconia ceramics has become the focus of research in order to improve the bonding strength. The new transparent zirconia requires a reconsideration of its surface treatment due to the change in crystal phase and the reduction in mechanical strength. The current surface treatment methods to improve the bonding strength of transparent zirconia include three main aspects:mechanical treatment, chemical treatment and combined mechanical-chemical treatment. In this paper, the effect of different surface treatment techniques on the bonding strength of transparent zirconia ceramics is reviewed.
