Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory disease that occurs in the hard and soft tissues surrounding the implant and is associated with a range of symptoms such as bone resorption, reduced osseointegration,peri-implant pocket formation or suppuration. In recent years, many studies have shown that the initiating factor in peri-implantitis is the formation of a bacterial biofilm and that the immune response induced by bacterial stimulation can further cause peri-implantitis tissue damage.Specific and non-specific immunity as well as allergic reactions have different functions in peri-implantitis.The balance between the pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines involved in these processes and the host immune cells is crucial for the osseointegration of the implant. Thus, the development of peri-implantitis can be influenced by modulating the host immune response. This article reviews the progress of research on the mechanisms of immune response in peri-implantitis,with the aim of providing new ideas for the clinical management of peri-implantitis.
