Objective:To investigate the efficacy of myofascial trigger point manipulation in the treatment of patients with restricted mouth opening. Methods:A total of 42 patients with restricted mouth opening who were treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Department of Prosthodontics from March 2022 to December 2023 were enrolled. All patients were treated with myofascial trigger point manipulation, focusing on the temporalis, masseter, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, and suprahyoid muscles. The evaluation criteria were maximum active mouth opening and subjective comfort scores. Results:Before intervention, the mean maximum active mouth opening was 3-26(16.07±5.93)mm,and the main limitation of mouth opening was grade Ⅱ.After intervention, the mean maximum active mouth opening was 6-30(20.64±5.91)mm,and the main limitation of mouth opening was grade I.The difference before and after intervention was statistically significant(t=-9.677,P<0.001).Except for 5 patients with a history of head and neck radiotherapy, all other patients with restricted mouth opening showed varying degrees of improvement in their mouth opening and the comfort scores of manual treatment was 60-100(82.43±14.40).Conclusion:Myofascial trigger point manipulation can improve non-radiotherapy-induced mouth restriction to a certain extent, especially for the limited mouth opening related to muscle spasms. With good comfort, safety and low cost,it can be used as a conservative treatment or an adjuvant treatment for patients with restricted mouth opening and is worth promoting in clinical practice.
