Verb Acquisition Research under the Extended Unit of Meaning—Taking the Verb"Encourage"as an Example
Since Sinclair proposed the"Extended Unit of Meaning",vocabulary research in second language acquisition has been closely related to grammar,while corpus-driven studies have made descriptions more objective.Based on the Extended Unit of Mean-ing and utilizing the Corpus of Contemporary American English(COCA),this study takes the verb"encourage"as the node word to analyze its features in terms of collocates,semantic preference,and semantic prosody.The research reveals that the word"encourage"forms different with collocates of different word classes,which leads to different semantic preferences.Furthermore,combined with specific contexts,it is found that besides conveying positive semantic prosody,this word can also express a mixed semantic prosody.
