A Descriptive Study of English Translation Strategies for"The Book of Songs:Guanj u"—Using the Translations by James Legge,Clement Francis Romilly Allen,Ezra Pound,Xu Yuan-chong,and Wang Rong-pei as Examples
Based on the strategic system for English translation of classical Chinese poetry,this paper evaluates five classic English translations of"Guanj u"from"The Book of Songs"from four aspects:language,form,word conversion,and additional translational expansion.While adhering to the principles of translating ancient poetry,each translation demonstrates a diversity of strategies,such as differences in language style,form treatment,word conversion,and annotation expansion.The study reveals the richness and com-plexity of the English translations of"Guanj u",verifies the applicability of the strategic system for English translation of classical Chi-nese poetry to the translation of"The Book of Songs",and emphasizes the importance of comprehensively applying translation strate-gies for accurately conveying the artistic conception of ancient poetry.
