A Contrastive and Metaphorical Analysis of the Chinese and English Animal Word"Fish"and Its Implications for Cross-cultural Communication
Both Chinese and English languages contain metaphorical phenomena using"fish"as the vehicle of metaphor.From the per-spective of cognitive linguistics,based on the theory of conceptual metaphor,through the comparative study of real linguistic materials,it is found that the conceptual metaphors of"fish"in Chinese and English share common and unique characteristics in terms of physical features,behavioral characteristics,value attributes,and functional attributes.These similarities and differences are the result of the combined effects of various factors such as geographical environment,history,culture,and ways of thinking.Understanding metaphors and their cultural connotations can help cross-cultural communication proceed smoothly.
