Research on the Impact of Income Inequality on Residents'Happiness
Based on the six-period data of China General Social Survey(CGSS)from 2012 to 2021,the ex-ante nonparametric method is used to decompose the income inequality into the effort inequality and opportunity inequality. From the perspective of structural decomposition, this study reveals the internal mechanism of income inequality on residents'happiness. The empirical results indicate that effort inequality have a positive impact on residents'happiness, while oppportunity inequality have a negative impact. This research conclusion remains robust and reliable after relevant robustness tests. This study utilizes the group regression and the two-tier SFA to explore the heterogeneity across different income levels, regions and years.Furtherly, the mechanism testing results of the constructed mediation effect model indicate that in the path of oppportunity inequality on residents'happiness, the social fairness plays an undeniable mediating role. The findings of this paper have policy implications for improving residents'happiness and seeking solutions to the"Easterlin paradox"in the Chinese context.
