Some Thoughts on the Problem of Technological"Transcendental Subject"
Has technology itself become a transcendental subject that projects and presupposes the human world? This is a contemporary problem of social knowledge seen in succession to Alfred Sohn-Rethel's thoughts of the transcendental subject. If technology presents itself as a transcendental subject through its abstract function of social synthesis, its subjectivity is clearly different from the subjectivity of human con-sciousness,since the former is realized by triggering real social activity(movement)and creating social forms by means of the abstract synthesis(i.e.,the"general intellect"of technology)inherent in real social activity. This social construction of technology energizes and reinvigorates our society, but it also contains a great crisis,as Heidegger saw, when nature is reduced to an object of domination within the transcenden-tal framework of technology, technology cuts off the ontological relationship between the human beings and the world and destroys the human being's structure of existence. And to respond to this crisis,it is nec-essary to return to Schelling's query to Kant about how the transcendental subjectivity, which is more-than-material,is produced.A transcendental principle and a transcendental system of technology is there-fore completely necessary for a contemporary theory of social knowledge.Only then can historical materi-alism truly become"Anamnesis der Genese"that solves the riddle of technology.
