Measuring the"Meta-structure"of China's Image on International Social Media Platforms and Testing the Topic-Platform-Emotion Model
Is there a"meta-structure"in the image of China emerging from the intelligent media environ-ment?What are the dimensions of this structure and the coefficients of each dimension? What is the role of platforms and algorithms in the topic-emotion association?Based on the Chinese topic data of the five ma-jor international social media platforms Twitter,Facebook,YouTube,Instagram, and TikTok in the past three years(2019-2022),we found that the"topic-platform-algorithm-emotion"model serves as the basis for measuring China's image.The"Topic-Platform-Algorithm-Emotion"model is found to be useful as a meta-structural equation for measuring China's image on international social media platforms, and the fit with empirical data confirms the significant"moderation"of the algorithm characterized by"repeated posts"in the presentation of emotional features of the country's image.Typically, the overall sentiment pro-file of China topics on Facebook is positive, but the algorithm moderates it to negative, while the opposite is true for Tiktok. This reversal phenomenon reflects the inevitable shift in the discourse of national image communication research in recent years,as well as the dilemma of realizing rational communication in the current international communication arena, which is characterized by"computational propaganda".
