The Impact of Digital Economy Development on Common Wealth in the Perspective of Digital Divide
The 20th Party Congress report proposes to accelerate the development of digital economy and solidly promote common prosperity. This paper explores the relationship between digital economy development and common wealth in the presence of the digital divide in a sample of 168 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2019.The study finds that the impact of digital economy development on common wealth is not linear but"U-shaped"due to the existence of the digital divide. The analysis of the impact mechanism shows that the digital economy can affect the level of common wealth through the advanced industrial structure and labor transfer, and the digital divide plays a significant moderating role in this relationship. The existence of the digital divide can reduce the positive impact of the digital economy on the common wealth by hindering the upgrading of industrial structure and causing the"return"of labor transfer on the one hand, and make the impact show significant regional heterogeneity on the other. The findings of this paper provide some policy implications on how to narrow the digital divide and promote the development of the digital economy for the common prosperity.
