The disposal of abandoned mines is a key issue in the field of energy and environment, which seriously affects the coordinated development of global resource development and environmental protection. In order to make better use of the large amount of resources left behind after mine abandonment, the current status of abandoned mines at home and abroad and the current status and characteristics of resource utilization of abandoned mines were introduced. The potential hazards of abandoned mines were briefly described, and the connotation and key scientific problems of comprehensive utilization of abandoned mines were expounded. The key technologies such as the development and utilization of geothermal energy in abandoned mines, the accurate utilization of groundwater resources, and the construction of underground gas storage were discussed. The technical difficulties of investigation and evaluation of geothermal energy resources in abandoned mines, stability of coal pillar dam body of underground reservoir, calculation of water storage capacity and location of underground gas storage were pointed out.The idea of resource utilization of abandoned mines was put forward. The research shows that the comprehensive utilization of abandoned mines has broad application prospects in the transformation and sustainable development of abandoned mines, which can promote the transformation and development of resource-exhausted cities in China.
