The Ji River was a major river flowing through the provinces of Yu and Lu in ancient times. It,along with the Yangtze,Yellow, and Huai Rivers, was collectively known as the"Four Major Rivers,"a classification established by ancient people based on the prevailing geographical conditions of the time. The academic assertion that the Ji River"originates from the Yellow River","does not independently flow into the sea",or is a"tributary of the Yellow River"is untenable.Since ancient times, the source of the Ji River has been the springs of Ji Yuan, gathering surface water from the vast northern regions of Yu Province to form a major river that flows independently into the sea.It is characterized by clear water,dis-tinct from the sediment-laden Yellow River system. To truly understand the disappearance of the Ji River and the evolution of its tributaries over the millennia,a thorough investigation into the changes in the wa-ter systems of northern Yu and southwestern Lu regions is necessary.
