Research Progress of Thermosetting Resin Based on Vanillin
Vanillin is a commercially available monoaromatic compound, which can be produced from lignosulfonates, and has become a hot research topic in material science owing to its unique chemical structure. This review firstly introduces the research progress of vanillin-based thermosetting materials, including epoxy resins, benzoxazines, phenolic resins and(meth)acrylates, emphasizing the chemical derivatization and crosslinking process based-on the unique structure of vanillin. Then, thermosetting resins with dynamic covalent bonds are summarized with their potential applications. The aldehyde group on vanillin facilitates the introduction of dynamic acetal, imine and dithioacetal groups, while disulfide,Diels-Alder adducts and β-hydroxyl esters can be installed by choosing the cross-linking system. After summarizing their properties and applications,a perspective is provided on its sustainability over raw material availability, material preparation, recycling, and degradation.
