Relationship between serum HER2 expression and clinicopathological characteristics in patients with bladder cancer
Objective:To investigate the relationship between serum HER2 expression level and clinicopatho-logical characteristics in patients with bladder cancer. Methods:We retrospectively collected and analysed clinico-pathological data of patients who underwent surgical treatment for bladder urothelial carcinoma at First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from June,2022 to March,2024.Serum HER2 expression levels among bladder cancer patients with different clinicopathological characteristics were compared.Patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer(NMIBC)were grouped according to the European Association of Urology NMIBC risk classification, and the differences in serum HER2 expression levels among different risk groups were compared. Results:A total of 170 patients were included in the study, consisting of 135 males and 35 females, with a median age of 67.5(14.5)years.Patients under 70 years old, those with high-grade tumors, muscle invasion, carcinoma in situ, and vascular invasion had higher serum HER2 expression level(P<0.05).Serum HER2 expression levels were significantly higher in the high-risk and very high-risk NMIBC groups compared to the low-risk and interme-diate-risk groups(P=0.034),and the optimal diagnostic threshold of distinguishing high-risk and very high-risk NMIBC based on serum HER2 expression was 8.0 ng/mL,with a specificity of 0.803.Conclusion:The elevated serum HER2 expression levels are closely related to the unfavorable clinicopathological characteristics of bladder cancer patients.Serum HER2 levels may assist in the preoperative identification of high-risk and very high-risk NMIBC patients, thereby guiding treatment strategies.
