A survey on the family medication awareness and science popularization needs of children with respiratory tract infections
Objective To understand parents'awareness of safe home medication administration for respiratory tract in-fections and their concerns and opinions about medication popularization, and provide references for the direction and content of medication popularization. Methods An electronic questionnaire was sent to parents of outpatient and emergency pediatric patients in Beijing Tongren Hospital,Capital Medicine University in the fourth quarter of 2023 to conduct a questionnaire sur-vey.The content of the survey included parents'situation, knowledge of medication, attitude and behavior toward safe medi-cation use,and their needs for related scientific knowledge. Results A total of 532 questionnaires were distributed and re-turned and 490 valid questionnaires were screened out, with a validity rates of 92.1%.Parents'cognitive score on the safe use of medications for respiratory tract infections was(12.5±3.2)points,and the overall cognitive level was poor. The differences in the scores of medication awareness among respondents of different genders, education levels, and occupations were statisti-cally significant(P<0.05).Parents'knowledge of the safe use of antipyretic and analgesic drugs, cough expectorants, and nebulized inhalation drugs was poor.More than half of the parents thought that the popularization of science was not helpful(1.8%)or occasionally helpful(51.2%),due to reasons such as contradictory contents and difficulty in distinguishing be-tween the true and the false.Perceptions of what form of science popularization was easier to understand varied by education level(P<0.05).Conclusion Most parents have cognitive deficiencies in the safe and rational use of medications for respirato-ry infections at home.Hospital pharmacists should make full use of various media platforms and various forms of populariza-tion of science to deliver relevant medication knowledge to parents of different ages and educational levels, improve parents'cognitive level of rational use of medications, and ensure the medication safety of children.
