Progress in research on intravenous iron formulations-induced hypophosphatemia
Intravenous iron is commonly used clinically to treat iron deficiency anemia in those who cannot receive oral iron, are intolerant of oral iron,or need rapid iron supplementation.Commonly used intravenous iron formulations include iron sucrose, iron dextran, ferric carboxymaltose, ferumoxytol, and ferric derisomaltose. In recent years, there have been numerous case reports of hypophosphatemia following intravenous iron infusion. As more clinical studies of hypophosphatemia associated with intravenous iron have been published, the drug authorities in several countries have issued warnings about hypophosphatemia associated with the infusion of a certain iron formulation. Therefore,we aim to compare different intravenous iron preparations and review the mechanism of hypophosphatemia induced by intravenous iron and the progress in relevant clinical studies. Finally, the treatment of intravenous iron-related hypophosphatemia mentioned in the literature is summarized to arouse clinical attention and provide references when using related drugs.
