Modern National Consciousness in Xu Zhimo's Non-Lyrical Proses from the Perspective of Humanism
Since the 1990s,Xu Zhimo's literary achievements have been re-evaluated,but the study mainly lies in poetry and lyric proses. His non-lyric proses such as miscellaneous thoughts and travel notes have not been paid enough attention to.What's more, there is a lack of in-depth analysis of the modern national consciousness implied in these proses.Rereading Xu Zhimo's essays from the perspective of humanism,we can get a glimpse of the evolution and basic connotation of his modern national consciousness. From his early contribution to the school magazine,Xu Zhimo showed his concern for the fate of the country and his hope to improve the quality of the nation. After studying abroad,he was influenced by British politics and culture, and aspired to and advocated democracy. When he returned from Europe,he argued about the Soviet Russia's issues and opposed to the violent revolution.Disappointed with the reality but not willing to be disappointed,he boldly criticized current politics and pursued freedom and ideals.Xu Zhimo's modern national consciousness reflects the worries and visions for modern China of in-tellectuals in his era,but it also had the limitations of idealism.
