Spring-Chiseling Activities in the Haihe River Basin and the Contribution and Influence of Liang Shitang's"Spring-Chiseling Theory"
Against the climate background of continuous droughts in North China in the 1920s,Liang Shitang,a staff member of Feng Yuxiang of the Northwest Army, put forward the"spring chiseling theory",and carried out ten years of springs chiseling in various provinces of North China from 1928 onwards, and successively wrote two books, namely Spring Chiseling:A Hand-book and Q&A on Spring Chiseling in a Simple Way.By doing this,he proposed a whole set of theories and methods on how to develop and utilize the underground water in the pre-mountain area. From 1934 to 1937,Liang Shitang presided over the spring chiseling activity in pre-mountain area of the Haihe River basin, opening a new stable water source to fight against the drought in Hebei at that time and achieving good results.Although the chiseling spring activity was interrupted by Anti-Japanese War,the theory and method of his chiseling spring gradually became the practical theory and experience of groundwater development in North China. His theory is an inheritance and development from"using the water source"(i.e.groundwater utilization)in an-cient Chinese traditional water conservancy, which is the experience summarized in ten years of rich practice. These theories and methods were later incorporated into China's scientific system of modern farmland water conservancy, making a significant con-tribution to China's water conservancy construction.
