The Version Evolution of Tongjian Jieyao Xubian in Ming Dynasty
The Tongjian Jieyao Xubian edited by Liu Yan was published and adapted many times in the Ming Dynasty and spread to Europe, which was a popular history book of the Ming Dynasty with a wider influence. In about the 4th year of Xuande in Ming Dynasty,Tongjian Jieyao Xubian was first printed by Liu Wenshou who worked in a publishing house named Cuiyan-jingshe in Jianyang and it had 30 volumes. The existing copies of the original edition system included Shuanggui Bookstore edition,Shanjing Bookstore edition and the edition of the eunuch institution called Silijian. There appeared a large number of editions with annotations for pronunciation and meaning of the Chinese characters later, among which the earlier one was the edition of Zunde Bookstore in the 9th year of Xuande in Ming Dynasty, but it didn't spread widely in later ages. However,a batch of editions with"interpretations"came out in the Hongzhi period which greatly affected the features of other editions in the late Ming Dynasty, but its number of volumes remained 30.During the reign of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty, two editions appeared successively, one in 21 volumes and the other 20 volumes. The former was officially published and represented by Jicheng's Fujian edition, while the latter was one of the earliest Chinese historical classics introduced into Europe. Both of them were closely related to the editions with"interpretations"and then produced some editions with different titles and authors. Therefore, the period of Hongzhi was critical to the change of text of Tongjian Jieyao Xubian, while the period of Jiajing was the key time for the change of its volume number. With the transformation of the historical atmosphere and the rise of the GangJi-an-style history works,Tongjian JieyaoXubian disappeared rapidly in Qing Dynasty.
