From Disability to"Invisibility":A Study on the Process of Marginalization of Disabled Older People from the Perspective of the Space Theory
Under the background of China's socio-economic transition and a severely ageing society, the transition of older people from disability to"invisibility"implies complex political-economic processes and interactions between individuals and the society.Based on the theory of space in sociology, this study built a theoretical framework of the multi-dimensional construction and isomorphic relationship between"body"and"space"to deconstruct the marginalization process of disabled older people.Based on the in-depth interviews and direct observation of disabled seniors and their families, communities, institutions and the government, this study found that disability brings older people multiple disadvantages, which causes them to suffer from the dilemmas of physical confinement and isolation in physical space, poverty and deprivation in social space,as well as depression and collapse in mental space. These dilemmas even trigger a chain reaction and vicious circle of marginalization in the multi-dimensional space, which makes these older people become marginalized"invisible"people.
