Mental Health Problems for Rural Empty-Nesters from the Perspective of Social Support
Implementing the national strategy of actively coping with population ageing and improving diversified social support are the necessary paths to achieve a high-quality healthy life for older adults in rural China.By exploring the relationship between social support and the mental health status of rural empty-nesters,based on data from Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey(CLHLS),this paper took rural empty-nesters as the research objects to verify that diversified provision of social support is an important way to meet the mental health needs of rural empty-nesters.The results show that social support has a significant impact on the mental health of rural empty-nesters,with intergenerational support,community support and emotional support contributing to varying degrees.In addition,gender,level of education,annual family income and health status are also important factors affecting the mental health of rural empty-nesters.It is then concluded that consolidating formal social support,improving informal support,and enhancing the health literacy of rural empty-nesters are the necessary paths to improve their mental health and improve their health as well as well-being.
