Digital Hometown:Media Empowerment in Social Integration and Identification of the Migrant Overseas Elderly
This study focuses on the elderly migrants with dual attributes of"international migrants"and"digital refugees".Through in-depth interviews and textual analyses, this study outlined a media empowerment system model for these individuals based on the triadic interaction model of social cognition, and attempted to understand their social integration from the perspective of media empowerment. Results show that the foreign media practices of the migrant elderly are centered on the two levels of relationships:strong and weak ties, positioning them as both"absent participants"and"familiar strangers".Under the media ecological narratives of different periods, patriotic sentiments and national consciousness strengthened their sense of place and provided media support for their identity transformation.By perceiving the usefulness and ease of use of media, these elderly individuals initiate new rounds of media practice, thereby completing an emotional cycle.Throughout this process, the culture of origin and local sentiments embedded in the media continuously accompany the elderly's media interactions, empowering them to build a new identity.
