Highly Efficient Conversion of Xylose to Furfural With Homogeneous Copper Salt Catalyst
Metal salts were used as homogeneous catalysts to convert xylose to furfural.Copper salts were found to be excellent catalysts, and CuCl2 showed the best catalytic performance. The effects of reaction conditions were studied in detail, and the reusability of system and reaction mechanism involved were discussed. The results showed that in 1 mL γ-valerolide solvent with 50 mg of xylose and CuCl2(mole fraction 10%to xylose),xylose conversion was close to 100%and the furfural yield was up to 66%after the reaction at 150℃for 60 min.The catalytic system showed good reusability. The catalyst catalyzed the reaction through the synergistic action of Brönsted and Lewis acids. The above results can provide useful references for the efficient utilization of biomass such as straw and rice husk.
