Factors affecting the mortality rate in river buffalo calf in large-scale river-type buffalo farms
The purpose of this paper is to statistically analyze the death factors of calves in a dairy buffalo farm in Guangxi from 2017 to 2023,combined with the basic information of calf birth,by means of field investigation and data analysis. The results showed that from 2017 to 2023,the average mortality rate of dairy calves(not distinguishing between healthy and weak calves)was 9.36%,and the comprehensive mortality rate of calves in each year ranged from 6.18%to 12.41%.When the newborn weight of calves was less than 25 kg,the mortality rate was(21.61±14.27)%,which was significantly higher than that of other newborn weight calves(P<0.05).The mortality of Nili/Lafite buffalo calves was significantly higher than that of Mora buffalo and hybrid buffalo(P<0.05).Calves who died within 0~30 days after birth accounted for(62.14±15.31)%of the total annual deaths, which was significantly higher than that of calves who died at other ages(P<0.05).The mortality rate of calves in spring was(21.03±10.13)%,which was significantly higher than that in other seasons(P<0.05).The mortality rate of female calves was 18.71%higher than that of male calves, and the difference was not significant(P>0.05).The study indicated that the death of milk calves was related to birth weight, breed, age, season and other factors.
