Research progress on the application of Chinese herbal medicine and probiotics to fermented feed additives
Chinese herbal extracts and probiotics can be used individually as feed additives and are widely applied in the breeding of livestock and poultry. However, the presence of many high molecular weight substances in Chinese herbal extracts affects the absorption and utilization of nutrients. The co-fermentation of Chinese herbal extracts with probiotics into a composite feed additive can effectively promote the release of active components in the herbs, enhance the absorption of nutrients, and also aid in the proliferation of probiotics, thereby producing more beneficial metabolic products with significant synergistic effects. The application of Chinese herbal medicine-probiotic fermented feed additives in the breeding of livestock and poultry has shown good growth promotion, immune regulation, liver protection, antioxidant properties, and improvement of the breeding environment, making it an ideal antibiotic alternative with broad application prospects. This article reviews the advantages of the co-fermentation of Chinese herbal medicine and probiotics and its application in the breeding of livestock and poultry, summarizes the current problems, and provides an outlook on future development directions, aiming to provide a reference for the application of Chinese herbal medicine-probiotic fermented feed.
