The mediating role of social support in death anxiety and quality of life among depressed elderly
Objective To understand the current status of death anxiety,quality of life and social support,and the mediation role of social support between death anxiety and quality of life in depressed elderly.Methods Death anxiety scale,quality of life scale and social support scale were used to collect relevant data of 200 depressed elderly people,and the correlation test of each variable was analyzed using Person correlation.Bootstrap method was used to test the mediating effect of social support on death anxiety and quality of life.Results The score of death anxiety in depressed elderly was(50.89±8.01);The total score of social support was 37.10±5.65,the subjective social support score was 19.06±3.46,the objective social support score was 11.28±2.63,and the social support utilization score was 6.76±2.09.The dimen-sions of quality of life score were that:physical function(PF)69.00±23.75,role physical(RP)41.50±33.67,body pain(BP)66.41±24.74,general health(GH)38.44±15.51,vitality(VT)35.62±14.88,social function(SF)35.38±20.05,and role emotional(RE)8.87±19.09,mental health(MH)30.89±15.95.Death anxiety in depressed elderly were negatively correlated with PF(r=-0.233),RP(r=-0.150),GH(r=-0.390),VT(r=-0.282),SF(r=-0.307),RE(r=-0.311),MH(r=-0.383)of quality of life(all P<0.01).Death anxiety was negatively correlated with subjective social support(r=-0.379)and social support utilization(r=-0.288)(all P<0.01).Subjective social support was posi-tively correlated with GH(r=0.211),VT(r=0.235),SF(r=0.305),RE(r=0.166)and MH(r=0.319)of quality of life(all P<0.05).Objective social support was positively correlated with RP of quality of life(r=0.163,P<0.05).The so-cial support utilization were positively correlated with PF(r=0.204),BP(r=0.160),VT(r=0.220),MH(r=0.191)of quality of life(all P<0.05).The direct effect of death anxiety on quality of life was-0.342(95%CI:-0.673--0.081),and the partial mediating effect of social support on death anxiety and quality of life was-0.156(95%CI:-0.475--0.033),the mediating effect accounted for 31.39%of the total effect.Conclusion Social support partially mediates the relationship between death anxiety and quality of life in depressed older adults,and increasing the level of social support fa-cilitates quality of life in depressed older adults.
