Effect of abdominal massage with essential oil on early gastrointestinal function recovery in patients af-ter spinal surgery
Objective To investigate the clinical effect of abdominal massage with essential oil on early gastroin-testinal function recovery after spinal surgery. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to select 202 pa-tients who underwent spinal surgery in Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University from May to July 2022.They were divided into control group(77 cases),compound essential oil treatment group(68 cases)and ultrasound treatment group(53 cases)according to the purpose of the study. The control group was given basic treat-ment,the compound essential oil treatment group was given abdominal massage with essential oil on the basis of the control group, and the ultrasound treatment group was given ultrasound conductometer on the basis of the control group. After 3 days of intervention, the patients' bowel sound recovery interval, first exhaust interval, defecation time and gastrointestinal symptoms of nausea and vomiting were observed. Results There was statistical significance in the interval time of bowel sound recovery between the three groups(P=0.002),and the pairwise comparison showed that the interval time of bowel sound recovery in the compound essential oil treatment group was shorter than that in the con-trol group(P=0.001).There was no statistically significant difference in the interval of first exhaust, the time of defe-cation,and postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms among the three groups(all P>0.05).Conclusion Abdominal massage with essential oil can shorten the interval of intestinal sound recovery in patients after spinal surgery, but it has no significant effect on shortening the interval of exhaust and defecation, and alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
